How to make sure boaters can identify your buoy

Help guests identify your buoy with clear photos, GPS coordinates, and identifiers like numbers, colors, or patterns. OnBuoy provides decals and optional mast buoys to improve visibility and deter unauthorized use. Mention landmarks in descriptions to aid navigation. These steps ensure smooth arrivals and strengthen trust between host and guest.

A seamless arrival and departure experience is a benefit to everyone. Here are two key strategies to ensure boaters can effortlessly identify your moorage:

     1. Capture Clear Photos with Identifying Marks:

Refer to our guide on taking high-quality moorage photos here. Within those photos, be sure to capture close-up shots that clearly show any identifying marks on your buoy.

This could include:

  • Unique Numbers or Lettering: If your buoy has a specific number or sequence of letters assigned to it, ensure these are visible in at least one photo.
  • Distinctive Colors or Patterns: Does your buoy have a unique color combination or pattern? Capture a close-up image showcasing this feature.

     2. Verify GPS Coordinates:

Before finalizing your listing, double-check the accuracy of the GPS coordinates you've entered for your moorage. This ensures guests have precise navigation data to locate your buoy upon arrival.

     3. Attach an OnBuoy decal, flag, or a mast buoy to your main float:

Shortly after your listing goes live, OnBuoy will send you two heavy-duty, waterproof and UV-resistant decals in the mail that you can attach to your main float.

The decals serve as a private property notice to deter unauthorized use of your moorage and also help authorized guests identify your buoy so they know they have arrived at the right location.

An upgrade option to consider is to add a mast buoy to your tackle. A mast buoy is a smaller buoy with a tall pole (or mast) extending from its center that attaches to the main float. This mast makes it easy to spot and grab the mooring line attached, simplifying the docking process for boaters.

OnBuoy offers a high-quality, made-in-the-USA mast buoy for sale to OnBuoy members. The mast buoy features a custom OnBuoy flag with the same design as the decal so it also serves as a private property notice and the QR code makes it easy for visiting boaters to ask permission to tie up.
